With the holiday season rapidly approaching, I think it’s safe to say that we are all in need of a vacation. Just thinking about all the gifts to buy, parties to attend, and errands to run makes me want to take a nap. But whether it’s work, money, or just not enough time to get away, this time of year there’s plenty of reasons getting in the way of taking a real vacation, even if it’s just for a weekend. So what to do when you are stuck in town but in desperate need of a getaway? Plan a staycation, of course! As self-appointed expert staycationers, we’ve rounded up all the rules you need to make sure your NOLA staycation is as luxurious and relaxing as possible.
Book a Hotel for the Weekend
A staycation isn’t complete without relaxing in some sweet digs. And really, how many times do we have a chance to check out the swanky hotels in our city? Whether you decide on the ritzy Roosevelt (because really, who can say no to their amazing lobby Christmas decorations), the hip Old No. 77 Hotel and Chandlery, or the newly remodeled Ponchartrain Hotel, you really can’t go wrong. And bonus, all of these hotels come with some pretty awesome bars and restaurants! So leave your chores at home and let someone else do the cooking and cleaning for you for the weekend.
Eat, Drink, and Eat Some More
Have a new fancy restaurant you’ve been meaning to try out? Now’s the time. Feel like drinking champagne during the middle of the day? Go for it. Because what is a vacation without indulging? So whether it’s half price weekend happy hour martinis at Domenica, fancy cocktails at Sylvain, or sharing a bottle of wine at Paladar 511, enjoy it. And hey, if you feel like having a second (or seventh) round, we won’t judge. And why stop there? treat yourself to some of your favorite dishes…. because everyone knows that carbs don’t count on vacation!
If you are looking to get down with your day drinking self, make sure to check out all of our favorite places to get your buzz on before 5pm …. or noon.
Be a Tourist
There is no better time to cross off your NOLA bucket list activities than on a staycation. All those places you’ve wanted to go, things you wanted to do, places you’ve wanted to eat – now’s the time! Whether (like me) you STILL haven’t gone to the Audubon Zoo (pathetic, I know), have been meaning to check out the Jean Lafitte Nature Reserve, or simply want to stroll around and see all the hipster sights of the Bywater, get to it.
And for all your animal lovers, did you know that the Audubon Aquarium offers “wild encounters” where you can get up close and personal with sea otters, sting rays, and best of all …. PENGUINS! Because really, is there any way to make a staycation better than by cuddling with some penguins?
Leave Stress at the Door
If there is one thing you should NOT be doing on vacation, it’s worrying. And the same goes for staycations – make a conscious decision to leave your stress at home, shut work in your office, and keep school at school. Whether it’s meditation, a glass of champagne, or a massage (yes, please!), do whatever you can to forget about your daily worries and take a mental vacation. Believe me, your productivity next week will be better for it. So shut your laptops, turn off your email notifications, and RELAX. You deserve it.
In the words of the great Tom Haverford, the #1 rule of any staycation is to treat yo’self. So basically, you do you. Whether your idea of a staycation is fancy cocktails, an LBD, and a night out on the town, or a weekend holed up in a nice hotel lounging in your comfiest sweatpants and losing yourself in Netflix marathons and cozy reading binges, do whatever it is that makes you happy. No FOMO, anxiety, or guilt allowed. And get to it, because we only have a month left to “Treat Yo’Self 2017!”
